St Marys Star of the Sea Primary School finishes for summer with a little help from Northgate

28 June 2011

After being 'adopted' by Northgate Managed Services earlier in the year, North Belfast primary school, St Mary's Star of the Sea, has rounded up this academic year with a Cares Challenge and school visit. Nineteen Northgate staff volunteered for a day and painted whilst pupils from year 5 visited Northgate's Head Office in Newtownabbey. As part of the visit, the pupils took part in the Northgate Trail, in which they met over 20 staff, found out more about the types of careers in IT and at the company and then shared their stories with the rest of the class.

Created by Business in the Community, the 'Adopt a School' program, seeks to build stronger links between businesses and local schools, utilising the expertise of the business community to help enrich the education sector. Since becoming one of the first businesses to sign up to the scheme, Northgate staff have helped year 5 students with their reading, in the "Time to Read" Programme. In addition the company has been on hand to advise the school on all aspects of business; from ensuring the school is able to make the most of ICT through to marketing the school to its local community. Northgate has donated IT equipment and software which will be used by both teachers and pupils to make the classroom more interactive, and has also been involved in a fundraising drives.
