Calling Leicester Schools and Colleges to showcase innovative use of technology

11 April 2011

Schools, Colleges and other key partners across Leicester are invited to showcase their excellent and innovative practice in the use of technology at the “Engage, Evolve, Excel” event on Wednesday 22nd June at the Leicester Tigers Stadium.

The event will enable teachers and practitioners from across all subject areas and across the phases of education, to share their experiences, best practice, resources and methods of how technology can be used to support effective learning and to engage students.

The event is organised by Leicester's Schools and Colleges in association with Leicester City Council, The Schools Development and Support Agency (SDSA) and supported by leading providers of ICT services and solutions, Northgate Managed Services (www.northgate-is.com/managedservices). This afternoon event, provided free of charge, will enable attendees to take away a wealth of practical ideas and strategies from the full range of exhibitors that they can then apply in their own schools and colleges.

In addition, keynote speaker Professor Stephen Heppell, a recognised leader in the fields of learning, new media and technology, will be sharing his latest experiences and findings on innovation in education to inspire attendees.

Mel Berry, Principal of Soar Valley College who is one of the organisers said "We are delighted to be able to offer this event . There is some very effective and exciting practice in the use of technology to support learning in all of our schools. This event is an excellent opportunity for schools in Leicester to tap into what is seen as best practice across the city. We are hoping that every secondary school, special school and college will be represented at the event

Chris Wiseman, Sales Director, Education, Northgate Managed Services said: "From our work with schools across the UK, we know there is a wealth of innovative talent out there, with many teachers creating fantastic, innovative learning techniques by using ICT in ways which others might never consider, for example using Nintendo Wii Fit for PE classes and incorporating Apple I-touch into music lessons. Our aim is to use the insights of our teachers to create a 'best practice' platform which can be shared by all teachers. Only by hearing from those at the coal face can we really appreciate how ICT will continue to play an inclusive and fully effective role in teaching today and in the future."

Josie Fraser, Leicester City Council's ICT Strategy Lead (Transforming Learning Environments) commented "Leicester City Council is committed to ensuring that all young people benefit from access to technology to support learning. All our learners need the skills and confidence to learn and work with technology, to ensure they can take advantage of the social and economic opportunities on offer in the modern world. This event gives Leicester a chance to showcase and share some of the innovative and effective ways our teachers and learners are currently using technologies within schools."

Schools and colleges interested in showcasing have been invited to submit a short summary detailing the types of innovative work that could be showcased at the event by registering online
