Teachers Asked to Share Best Practice in the Innovative use of ICT in the Classroom

03 November 2009

Entry Deadline = 20th November 2009 Teachers from schools throughout Northern Ireland are to be recognised for their innovative ideas and forward-thinking use of ICT in the classroom, thanks to a unique competition organised by Northgate Managed Services, the ICT managed services provider.

The province-wide competition aims to harness and share the very best ideas generated by NI's teaching community, with the long term objective of enhancing the learning of our children and young people.

Northgate's aim is to maximise the very real and practical skills of the teachers by offering a vehicle to share how they use ICT to enhance teaching and learning in their school.

"Teachers are at the forefront when it comes to shaping the workforce of the future - and when it comes to ICT their input is vitally important," said Stuart Gunning, Regional Director, Education, Northgate Managed Services.
"From our work with schools province-wide we know there is a wealth of innovative talent out there - with many teachers creating fantastic, innovative learning techniques by using ICT in ways which others might never consider, for example using Nintendo Wii Fit for PE classes and incorporating Apple I-touch into music lessons. Our aim is to use the insights of our teachers to create a 'best practice' platform which can be shared by all teachers. Only by hearing from those at the coal face can we really appreciate how ICT will continue to play an inclusive and fully effective role in teaching today and in the future."

Thanks to the success of its partnership with Classroom 2000 (C2K), Northgate works closely with every school in Northern Ireland in the delivery of ICT Managed Services and network support. Yet the company feels it can go further still to fully understand how education can benefit from ICT, and more importantly how Northgate can help teachers and pupils maximise their learning potential.

Open to teachers from all primary, post-primary, special educational needs and nursery schools throughout NI, the competition will highlight what ICT is achieving in the classroom, how it helps deliver the learning process, and the key educational benefits resulting from ongoing investment in ICT.

Teachers spanning all subjects and modules are asked to submit a short summary (maximum 400 words) detailing how they've used ICT innovatively and effectively in their classroom. Two members of staff from two schools in NI will each win all expenses paid trips to BETT 2010, the world's largest education, information and ICT event. Held in London in January, BETT showcases the best examples of international educational technology and is widely anticipated by teachers throughout the UK.
